On February 17th, 2023 (February 16th, Beijing time), the construction of the first phase of the 120 MW Peñasco Port solar power project in Mexico was completed by the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE). The project was equipped with a complete set of energy storage solutions, advanced storage equipment, overall commissioning, and technical support provided by China Power New Source Smart Storage, marking the first overseas electrochemical energy storage application by State Power Investment Corporation (SPIC) in Mexico.

During the inauguration ceremony of the power station held on the same day, Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador visited the energy storage project and praised the high-quality storage equipment and system services provided by the Chinese enterprise. He stated that the complementary energy storage project completed on this occasion will further enhance the reliability of the regional power system.

To promote the high-quality international development of emerging industries of State Power Investment Corporation (SPIC), China Power New Source Smart Storage established a working team from the beginning of the project signing to its completion. The team took proactive action, focused on engineering quality, and ensured that all system-level equipment of the energy storage project was significantly superior to international standards, receiving recognition from the project team in Mexico. During the design process, China Power New Source Smart Storage customized the "Peñasco Port Solution" by using high-security, high-reliability, and large-capacity lithium iron phosphate cells and an internationally leading 1500V high-voltage platform for battery integration technology. The fire protection system adopted the world's first early detection and linkage warning system, as well as protective multiple-point warning and network-style perfluorohexane fire extinguishing equipment. The equipment scene was based on outdoor standard prefabricated cabins, with features such as modularity, easy installation, and maintenance.

The Peñasco Port solar project is the first national solar project led by the Mexican government, located in Sonora State, Mexico, with a total planned capacity of 1 GW. Once completed, it will become one of the top 10 solar projects in the world and the largest solar project in the entire Latin American region. It will effectively alleviate the electricity shortage problems in the northern Baja California region of Mexico and surrounding areas.
