Fluence Plans to Launch Four Battery Energy Storage Projects in Lithuania with a Total Capacity of 200MW/200MWh
According to foreign media reports. These projects have begun testing and are expected to be operational in a few months.
The four battery energy storage projects, connected to the substations in ?iauliai, Alytus, Utena, and Vilnius, began construction in June last year. These energy storage systems will allow Lithuania's power grid to operate in island mode and synchronize with the EU power grid. Lithuania is seeking to disconnect from the Russian power system, a measure that was taken before the outbreak of the Russia-Ukraine conflict in early 2022.
The initial testing of the batteries, transformers, and other electrical equipment for these energy storage projects was conducted last month, and further testing and debugging will be fully launched before the end of this spring and connected to the grid. These battery energy storage projects are deployed by a Lithuanian state-owned energy holding company, EPSO-G, through Energy Cells.
EPSO-G said that these battery energy storage projects will be launched in sequence rather than simultaneously and will provide backup services for isolated power system operation. The company announced the development and deployment of these projects for the first time in December 2021.
The total investment for these four battery energy storage projects will reach 109 million euros ($116 million), with most of the funds (80%) provided by the EU's Recovery and Resilience Facility (RRF) plan. Within the EU, the fund will also provide some funding to energy storage projects in Finland and Greece.
As one of the world's largest battery energy storage system integrators, Fluence, in collaboration with its parent company Siemens, signed a 15-year design, manufacturing, and connection of battery energy storage projects to the transmission system and maintenance contract.
