According to foreign media reports, the Swedish distribution network operator Ellevio is investing in and deploying four battery energy storage projects with a total installed capacity of 70MW. This is the latest project in a series of large-scale energy storage projects that Ellevio plans to deploy. Alfen provides the battery energy storage systems used in these projects.

Ellevio will deploy two 15MW battery energy storage systems in Kungsbacka and Lindome, which are expected to be completed this spring. Another 40MW battery energy storage system will be deployed in an undetermined location in central Sweden. All three battery energy storage systems will be put into use in 2024.
Ellevio said that as more renewable energy power generation facilities are implemented online, battery energy storage systems will help balance and optimize grid operation. Ellevio is launching these projects through its energy services division, Ellevio Energy Solutions.

Ellevio ordered a 10MW battery energy storage system from Alfen, a Dutch energy storage system integrator, in May last year, and Alfen will also become a new project supplier.

According to the prediction of research institutions, Sweden's electricity demand will reach 300TWh by 2025, and the pumped storage power generation facilities (PHES) operated in the country are mainly to meet the electricity demand of flexible services, which means that the planned deployment of battery energy storage projects will increase significantly.

The order of Ellevio has become the most significant order in Sweden. The company plans to deploy a series of battery energy storage projects with an installed capacity of 20MW, 40MW, 60MW, and 70MW, respectively.

Kristofer Fr, Director of Strategy and Business Development, Ellevio? Jd said, "Battery energy storage system is an exciting technology, which brings many benefits to the power system. In just over 20 years, Sweden's electricity consumption has doubled, so we must develop a complete ecosystem, including digital solutions, energy storage, support services, etc."

The company, Vattenfall, a Swedish state-owned power supplier, and E.ON, a German utility company headquartered in Germany, are one of Sweden's three most significant distribution network operators. Vattenfall entered the field of battery energy storage as early as 2020 and operates the most extensive battery energy storage system in the country at present. Its scale is 5MW/20MWh, and it is built with the battery of the BMW i3 EV.

E.ON has not announced the deployment of any battery energy storage project in Sweden. However, the 40MW battery energy storage system deployed by the renewable energy developer OX2 will be built near the substation operated by E.ON.
