Borrego, a provider of solar and storage EPC and O&M services, has said it has completed the construction of 15 solar+storage projects in New York and Massachusetts for AES Corporation with a total storage capacity of 169MWh, according to foreign media reports.

The solar+storage projects in the two northeastern U.S. states have a total installed capacity of 96 M.W. of solar power facilities and a storage system size of 50 M.W./169 MWh with an average duration of 3.4 hours, with storage units in the storage system ranging from 1.7 MWh to 17 MWh. Global energy developer AES Corporation is the energy asset owner.

In a June 16 press release, Borrego said these are among its first DC-coupled solar+storage projects and the most extensive portfolio of energy storage deployed for a single customer. DC-coupled technology enables solar power facilities to generate up to 30 percent additional annual energy output at the exact interconnection cost without the accompanying deployment of an energy storage system.

Most projects are community solar power facilities, which means that ownership of these projects is split between local individuals and businesses. Massachusetts allows them to participate in the state's SMART incentive program, which guarantees payment by owners of community solar power facilities for 20 years. The program has been a significant driver of solar+storage projects in the state.

Solar+storage projects deployed in New York State will provide power for its Distributed Value of Energy (VDER) program, which will provide incentives for projects that can deliver energy to the grid when it is needed most by paying an hourly rate.

Being an early adopter of energy storage systems and solar+storage projects is not a challenge, but completing its energy portfolio deployment for AES Corporation made it all worthwhile," Pont said. Over the years, we have worked with our product partners to develop and test DC-coupled system hardware and energy management and control systems to enable these projects to deliver more solar power than ever in this market." John, Vice President of Solutions at Borrego

The industry press recently reported on some of the challenges faced by co-located deployment projects with shared grid connectivity in the U.K. market, which may also be met in the U.S., including issues regarding SPV structure, grid access application timing, and offtake agreements.

Borrego recently sold its development division and pipeline to investor ECP to focus on growing its EPC and O&M business.

The company is also working with AES Corporation on other projects, including an EPC contract for three solar farms in Michigan. In addition to recently announced projects, it may also provide AES Corporation with additional solar+storage projects, some of which are listed on its website.
