According to foreign media reports, Singapore Energy and Urban Development Group Shengke Industrial Group recently opened the largest battery energy storage project in Southeast Asia in Singapore. For this reason, Singapore has completed the energy storage deployment target planned to be achieved by 2025, three years ahead of schedule.

The opening ceremony of this 200MW/285MWh battery energy storage project was jointly organized by the Shengke Group and Singapore Energy Market Authority (EMA).

The 200MW battery energy storage project deployed by Shengke Group in Jurong Island, Singapore was put into operation

Singapore Energy Market Authority (EMA) awarded the project contract to Shengke Group through the Letter of Intent (EOI) in May last year. The company started construction of the project one or two months after signing the contract and completed the deployment by the end of 2022, which means that the battery energy storage project took only six months from construction to commissioning.

The battery energy storage project is deployed on 2 hectares of land in Jurong Island, Singapore, a highly industrialized area with most of Singapore's energy production and infrastructure.

According to industry media reports, the battery energy storage project was constructed by 800 independently deployed container battery energy storage systems using lithium iron phosphate batteries (LFP) and entered the final testing stage in October 2022 to balance the power supply and demand of the power grid, and was used for various auxiliary services.

By deploying this battery energy storage project, Singapore Energy Market Authority (EMA) has achieved and exceeded the country's goal of deploying a 200MWh energy storage system by 2025.

This is the second grid-scale battery energy storage project after Wasilan Company deployed the 2.4MWh battery energy storage project in Singapore. The battery energy storage project deployed by Wasilan Company was completed and put into use in 2020. This goal is part of an "Accelerating Singapore's Energy Storage ACCESS" plan implemented by the Singapore Energy Market Authority (EMA), through which the department solicited expressions of interest.

It is reported that the Energy Market Authority of Singapore (EMA) will continue to implement the ACCESS plan and seek ways to better integrate the energy storage system into Singapore's power grid, which will be a necessary measure to achieve the goal of deploying 2GW solar power generation facilities by 2030.

According to industry sources, developing a battery energy storage system in Singapore is challenging because of its dense population, lack of space for deploying energy storage systems in urban areas and corresponding fire safety and urban planning regulations.

Singapore has yet to set a net zero goal but hopes to significantly reduce carbon emissions by 2050 and achieve carbon neutrality in the second half of this century. According to the data released by the Singapore Energy Market Authority (EMA), the carbon emissions of the power industry account for about 40% of Singapore's total carbon emissions.

Dr. Tan See Leng, Minister of Manpower and Second Minister of Trade and Industry of Singapore, Koh Chiap Khong, CEO of Singapore Energy Market Authority (EMA) and Koh Chiap Khong, CEO of Shengke Group Singapore and Southeast Asia, attended the opening ceremony of the project recently.

Shengke Group actively participates in the international energy storage market, including Britain, and already has a 709MWh energy storage portfolio. The company provided more details of this battery energy storage project deployed in Jurong Island.
