The Singapore Electricity Market Authority (EMA) has confirmed that the largest battery energy storage project in Southeast Asia to date will be put into operation in Singapore in November.

The 200MW/200MWh battery energy storage project was delivered by Sembcorp, an engineering service group based in Singapore. Jurong Island has a large industrial park and most of the country's energy production and infrastructure.

The Singapore Electricity Market Authority (EMA) has recognized that battery energy storage system is a game changer for integrating renewable energy such as solar energy and wind power, and provides the stability of power grid operation to help manage the mismatch between power supply and demand.

Singapore launched the "Energy Storage Access" program in 2018. The Singapore Electricity Market Authority said earlier this year that it welcomed bids from developers and/or integrators who can build, own and operate 200MW/200MWh energy storage systems in Singapore.

According to industry media reports in June, Shengke won the bid to deploy this battery energy storage project. Shengke has been deploying battery energy storage projects in Britain and other countries and regions. However, the Jurong Island project is the first energy storage project deployed by Shengke Company in China.

Prior to this, Singapore's first grid-scale battery energy storage system was opened and operated in 2020. This project is a 2.4MWh battery energy storage system provided and deployed by Waxilan Company.

The Singapore Electricity Market Authority (EMA) said recently that this battery energy storage project will be deployed in two locations on Jurong Island, covering an area of 2 hectares, which may be one of the fastest deployed energy storage systems so far.

The project is constructed by lithium iron phosphate battery (LFP), and the fast-responding battery energy storage system will be used to deal with the mismatch between energy supply and demand, and perform various adjustment auxiliary services to deal with the fluctuation caused by the adoption of solar power in the power grid.

Singapore Electricity Market Authority (EMA) pointed out that lithium iron phosphate battery is a proven, safe and high-performance battery, and it has been widely used all over the world.

The agency said in a media announcement that it will continue to formulate policies and regulatory conditions and standards to support and guide Singapore's energy storage deployment. According to the Singapore Electricity Market Authority (EMA), this may include guidelines and rules on the installation and maintenance safety of battery energy storage systems, combined with local operating conditions in Singapore.

Although this will be the largest battery energy storage project in Southeast Asia so far. Recently, industry media have also reported various large-scale projects in the region, the most notable of which may be the Philippine and Taiwan Province markets in China.

For example, in July this year, the energy storage system integrator Fluence Company signed an agreement to deploy a 100MW battery energy storage project in Taiwan Province, China, which is the third energy storage project deployed by the company in Taiwan Province so far.

According to reports, SMC Global Power Company, a public utility company in the Philippines, said in July that about half of the 1GW/1GMWh battery energy storage project portfolio deployed by the company has been deployed, and the largest installed capacity of the battery energy storage system is about 80MW. Other energy storage system integrators (such as Waxilan Company and ABB Company) have also signed contracts to deliver energy storage systems.
