According to foreign media reports, Ohio Power Site Selection Committee recently approved the investor Eolian Company to deploy a large independent battery energy storage project in the state.
On October 20th, this committee member awarded the environmental compatibility and public demand certificate for Flint Grid battery energy storage project being developed by Eolian Company. If the developer doesn't get this certificate, it won't be able to deploy the project in the state.
Eolian plans to build a 200MW/800MWh Flint Grid battery energy storage system near New Albany, Ohio. Crucially, the energy storage system is close to a large number of data centers, and will share the interconnection points with these data centers, and Intel Corporation is also opening a chip production factory nearby.
The battery energy storage system can be charged during the period of high renewable energy generation, and then discharged during the peak power period, reducing the operating pressure of the power grid and the demand for fossil fuel power generation.
On the same day that Flint Grid battery energy storage system was approved for deployment, Ohio Power Site Selection Committee also approved Harvey Solar Project solar power generation project, which is a 350MW solar power farm proposed by renewable energy developer Open Road Renewables.
According to the document submitted by Eolian Company to the Ohio Power Site Selection Committee (OPSB) in October 2021, it is expected that this large-scale battery energy storage system will start construction in the third quarter of 2023 and start commercial operation in the second quarter of 2024.
Eolian company also purchased a piece of land for the deployment of the project, and will build a substation to transmit power to an existing 138kV substation, and the nearby data center will also be connected to the power grid through this substation.
"The overall purpose of deploying this battery energy storage project is to strengthen the reliability of power grid and provide clean power to Ohio's large-capacity transmission system to meet the needs of power companies and their customers," said the Ohio Power Site Selection Committee. The power of the energy storage system will be delivered to the transmission grid operated by PJM Internet Company, and sold in a wholesale way or according to the power purchase agreement. "
Eolian company acquired the project and the power generation assets of another developer, Able Grid Company. Since 2017, the two companies have established a joint venture company, and plan to deploy 10GW of large-scale energy storage system combinations in the United States. Eolian company completely acquired this joint venture company in 2021. Not long ago, the company awarded a procurement contract of 200MW battery energy storage system to Waxilan, an energy storage system integrator, for deploying two battery energy storage projects in Texas.
